I'd like to start by saying you're welcome I didn't title this post something like Destiny 2 Anal Pass; I would have gotten more clicks. You know what, fuck it, I'm doing it.
Yesterday's Destiny stream held a lot of cool surprises, weapon changes, new game modes, subclasses, and a bunch of other stuff I loved. It also added a new Annual subscription that will add endgame content on top of the expansions. Destiny isn't the first game to charge us a yearly fee for content, but most had moved away from it, which made it all the more surprising when it popped up in the stream yesterday. They made it clear the additional content wasn't cutscenes and story but more things to chase for people that tend to run out of things to do.
I have mixed feelings about this. I never make it to the top level light caps, but I do get into the raids eventually. I'm not some filthy casual, but I'm not breaking a sweat either. If the price is right maybe this is a smart step for games like Destiny, just pay for the content you want and not content you'll never see anyway. Though I am guessing there is a hefty discount upfront with steep incline if you later decide you want it.
There is a part of me that has always wondered how games this big were being put out for only $60. I remember my parents dropping $50 on a game in the early 90s. In today's money that is close to $100 and the games have only gotten more complicated with bigger staffs and more ad dollars. If we want the industry, we love to keep giving us bigger better games maybe this is the price we pay. The real problem with these types of add-ons is now what you are going to get before you buy it. I want it to be super clear what new items we are getting, a schedule they will keep, and repercussions if they don't. If this is the new world we live then it's not wrong for the consumer to what very clear expectations of what is coming.
